I can repair your Vaillant ecotec F.28 problem with one visit. I specialise in Vaillant combi boiler repairs. Please call 07515058714 to arrange a visit by a local Gas Safe registered Vaillant expert.
The F28 fault code on the Vaillant ecoTEC models is generally related to the gas supply. If you read the manual it says “Appliance does not start: Attempts to ignite during start failed”. It then goes on to list the possible causes. The F28 does not automatically indicate a fault with the appliance itself.
The F28 fault code means that the appliance burner has not lit, or the flame has not been detected by the printed circuit board for some reason. Assuming you have gas, this problem could be as a result of dirty electrodes(less likely), although more than likely you would be looking at an issue with the gas valve. The fault could even trace back to the printed circuit board itself although this is less common on these boilers(as the cause of F28).
As a general rule, on the first generation of Vaillant ecoTEC’s manufactured between 2005 – 2012, gas valve and fan faults are least common(in my experience). However on the second generation of ecoTEC’s manufactured from 2012 onwards, gas valve failure on Plus and Pro models is not uncommon at all(in my experience). If you have a second generation ecoTEC Pro and you are experiencing the F28 then there is a good chance you may be experiencing the F29 fault as well. The F29 is related but different. If you get this fault code it means that the burner has been lit and has gone out for some reason. This may be an intermittent fault but is usually related to a faulty gas valve.
As an end user if you experience these fault(s) with your boiler you can attempt to reset the appliance and check other gas appliances to see if there is gas present. If you have no other gas appliances you can check to see if you have credit on your gas meter(if applicable). Failing that you will have to someone competent and Gas Safe registered to fix the problem.
All of the components I have mentioned (gas valve) can be tested in various ways to determine what needs replacing to fix the problem. No guesswork should be necessary for any “engineer” to offer a resolution to the F28 fault. Replacing parts on boilers based on guesswork is almost always an expensive endeavour for someone.
It is important to note that this is NOT intended to help other engineers and it is most definitely NOT intended as a DIY self help guide for homeowners trying to fix their own boilers.
If you are an engineer seeking information on how to fix this problem and this has been helpful in some way then thats great.
